2 Peter 1:1-11
Race riots on Sydney beaches. Unjust international trade deals. The murder of the teenager Anthony Walker in Liverpool. Our world is just as corrupt and fractured as Peter’s (v 4). Peter knew all about corruption after seeing the religious authorities conspire against Jesus. Yet, against the odds, this flawed fisherman’s faith didn’t implode or fade after the murder of his Lord, rather he emerged as a strong and inspirational leader of the early Church. What else but the same power that raised Jesus from the dead could have brought about that transformation?
Are you demoralised at the odds stacked against you? Just look at Peter. He shows us that no matter how much of a loser you think you are, it is possible to live a life of truth, sacrifice and fruitfulness because the one that is in you is greater than the one who is in the world (vs 3,10; compare 1 John 4:4). In verses 5–7, Peter also gives us a list of qualities to aim for and build towards. But how do we go about doing this stuff? 1) Go for it. You have one life to live, so resolve to make the most of every opportunity to live, laugh, obey the Holy Spirit, forgive, pray and share your faith. 2) Ask God to fill you daily with his power. 3) Make mistakes… and lots of them! And when you do, put things right with God, put things right with the people around you, but keep on living boldly.
Thank you, Jesus, that you love and have rescued a loser like me. Help me to live humbly yet boldly in the power of your Spirit, today and every day that you give me
